In Honduras there is a recent mandate on having English education in every school. In a country where not many people have had the opportunity to learn English, especially in the rural areas, this mandate has become a great challenge for most schools here in the Frontera.
Each high school usually has a specialized English teacher. SOME middle schools are lucky to get sent an English teacher. But more often than not in elementary and middle schools, one unlucky, non-English speaking teacher is assigned to the subject. Usually the teacher assigned has picked up on some street language – some very basic words or phrases – and that is all they have to work with!
In Camasca, four different elementary and middle schools and two kindergartens throughout the town gathered on Friday for a training in English. They shared resources, learned new words, and most of all were there to motivate one another!
Paul, Sandy and I were invited to come and give a helping hand. The teachers had good reason to invite us. They could do this all themselves, but they don’t know how to pronounce the words, so what good would that do them? That is where we were able to come in. For about an hour and a half we went through common vocabulary and phrases and had them listen and repeat. We were able to correct bad pronunciations and give them tricks on how to make certain sounds. English is hard!
Unfortunately we don’t have a big enough staff or enough volunteers to help each school and each teacher individually on their English goals. However, taking advantage of opportunities like this is what we CAN do. We are lucky to work with motivated teachers who are taking this extra time to give their students the best education they can. At the end of the session we had some fun and finished by teaching them three classic English songs – “Old MacDonald Had a Farm,” “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes,” and “If You’re Happy and You Know It.”

En Honduras hay un mandato recién hecho en tener la educación de inglés en cada escuela. En un país donde no hay mucha gente que tiene la oportunidad para aprender el inglés, especialmente en las áreas rurales, este mandato ha presentado un gran reto para muchas escuelas aquí en la Frontera.
Cada colegio típicamente tiene un profesor especializado en Ingles. ALGUNOS centros básicos tienen la suerte para recibir un profesor de inglés. Pero la mayoría de las veces en las escuelas primarias y los centros básicos, un profesor sin la suerte, que no habla Inglés está asignado al sujeto. Típicamente ese profesor ha aprendido un poco ingles de la calle – algunas palabras y frases básicas – y eso es todo que saben!
En Camasca, cuatro escuelas primarias y centros básicos y dos de kínder en todo Camasca se reunieron el viernes pasado para una capacitación en inglés. Ellos compartieron recursos, aprendieron palabras nuevas y sobre todo se motivaron uno al otro!
Pablo, Sandra y yo estamos invitados a venir y dar nuestra mano de ayuda. Los profesores tenían buena razón para invitar a nosotros. Ellos podían hacer la capacitación solos, pero no saben la pronunciación de las palabras, y por eso no sería muy útil. Eso es donde pudimos ayudar. Por cómo una hora y media revisamos vocabulario y frases comunes, y los profesores nos escucharon y nos repitieron. Pudimos corregir las pronunciaciones malas y darles trucos en cómo hacer sonidos específicos. El inglés es difícil!
Desafortunadamente no tenemos empleados ni voluntarios suficientes para poder ayudar a cada escuela y a cada profesor individualmente con sus metas en inglés. Sin embargo, aprovechando de oportunidades así como este es lo que SI podemos hacer. Estamos afortunados trabajar con profesores motivados quien toma este tiempo extra para poder dar a sus estudiantes lo mejor educación posible. Al fin de la sesión nos divertimos un poco y terminamos enseñándoles tres canciones de inglés clásicos – “Old MacDonald Had a Farm,” “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes,” and “If You’re Happy and You Know It.”
