Angel’s Day Off – Angel’s día sin clases

You know those awesome few days a year when your teacher isn’t able to get to class or find a substitute? Well for our 5^th grade at the bilingual school that day was last Monday. Two boys – Angel and Noe – didn’t get the message and came to school in the morning anyways. Sandy and Paul said they could go home. But then Sandy thought of something else…she offered them the opportunity to stay and “play” on the tablets if they wanted to.

We say “play,” because our tablets are filled with purely educational applications – but they are fun! From English stories to multiplication tables to Spanish grammar tests and more, the kids love it all. Angel and Noe readily accepted the opportunity as oppose to going back to their homes bored for the day. Noe stayed for a little while, but left when he felt like heading home. Angel however blew us all away.

Angel entered into KA Lite to work on math problems. From 8am-lunch time, he couldn’t stop! He kept going and going, with the occasional help from Mrs. Sandy on tough or new subjects. He was flying. Not only did he surprise us with his intelligence, but I think he surprised himself too. As the subject matter got more advanced he would shout out little cheers as he kept got the problems correct. Angel is competing in the town-wide math olympics competition this coming Friday. The math Olympics is something that occurs all across Honduras. There are three levels throughout the year: town-wide, department-wide, and country-wide. He is one of three students in 5^th grade competing. I asked what kind of studying or extra math they have done to prepare, and he said nothing! I have no doubt he will excel on Friday. I don’t believe it was just a coincidence that he was the boy to come to class on Monday. It opened his eyes to the possibilities he has with these awesome resources at his fingertips. He has already asked me when he can come in again to practice on his own time.

There are always those handfuls of kids that take advantage of their resources to excel. They might not know their true potential until they get a little push, like having a tablet in hand. We will let you know how Angel and his classmates do on Friday after the competition!

Sabe esos pocos días asombrosos cada año cuando su maestro(a) no puede venir a dar clases? Pues, para quinto grado en La Bilingüe el lunes pasado, vino ese día. Dos niños, Angel y Noe, no recibieron el mensaje y vinieron a la escuela en la mañana. Sandra y Pablo les dijeron a los niños que pueden regresar a sus hogares. Pero Sandra pensó en algo más…ella les ofreció la oportunidad quedar y “jugar” en las tabletas.

Decimos “jugar” porque nuestras tabletas están llenas solamente de aplicaciones educacionales – pero son divertidos! Los niños encantan a todas – desde historias en Ingles a las tablas de multiplicación a pruebas de la gramática en español. Angel y Noe rápidamente aceptaren la oportunidad en vez de regresar a sus casas para un día aburrido. Noe quedo por un poco tiempo, pero salió cuando sintió que quería estar en la casa. Sin embargo, Angel nos voló lejos.

Angel entro a KA Lite para trabajar en las matemáticas. Desde la 8 de la mañana hasta el almuerzo al medio día, el no pudo de dejar! Él siguió y siguió, con la ayuda ocasional de Mrs. Sandra en sujetos difíciles o nuevos. Él no solamente nos sorprendió a nosotros con su inteligencia pero creo que a su mismo también. Durante que los sujetos cambiaron en más difícil y más difícil, salieron gritos de motivación y emoción cuando siguió contestando bien. Angel está competiendo en la competencia de la olimpiada de matemáticas en nivel del pueblo este viernes. La olimpiada de matemáticas es algo que pasa a través de toda Honduras. Hay tres niveles de la competencia durante el año: los pueblos, los departamentos y el país. Él es uno de tres estudiantes de quinto grado participando. Yo le pregunte de qué tipo de preparación extra han hecho para la competencia y él me dijo que no han hecho nada! No tengo ninguna duda que él va a sobresalir el viernes. No creo que fue una coincidencia que él fue el niño a venir a clases el lunes. Sus ojos abrieron a las posibilidades que tiene el con los recursos a sus dedos. Ya me pregunto cuando él podría regresar a practicar en su tiempo libre.

Siempre hay el grupo de estudiantes que aprovechar de los recursos para sobresalir. Ellos tal vez no sepan su potencial total hasta que están empujados un poco, como tener una tableta en mano. Vamos a avisarles cómo va la competencia esta viernes para Angel y sus compañeros!
