When children read, communities grow.
Sometimes the most powerful change begins with a single page. Across the mountains of Intibucá, thousands of children are discovering that reading is more than a school activity—it is a doorway to imagination, confidence, and opportunity. What began as a program to motivate students to read has grown into a movement that is transforming classrooms, families, and entire communities.
Beyond the Classroom | The Reading Program 2025
The Reading Program isn't just about finishing books; it’s about falling in love with them. By bringing together engaging reading contests, new books, and improved resources, we are helping students build a habit that will last a lifetime. This is creating real impact by providing the digital tools and equipment needed to help young minds sharpen their critical thinking and understanding.
The energy is contagious. We see it in the teachers who are finding creative new ways to inspire their pupils, and in the parents who are now sitting down to read with their children at home. What began as a pilot project is now a cherished local tradition, celebrated every year through our Municipal and Departmental Reading Championships.
Real Impact, Real Lives
In 2025 alone, the numbers told an incredible story: 254 schools joined in, and more than 500 teachers stepped up as mentors. Together, they reached over 31,000 young readers across 17 municipalities. This success was so profound that the Department of Education Office in Intibucá has officially adopted the program, ensuring the opportunity remains available to every child in the department, year after year.
In the rural heart of Honduras, finding a book can still be a struggle. For many children, the world can feel small when resources are scarce. We are working to change that. By partnering with mayors and communities, we are helping them to turn public libraries into vibrant hubs of knowledge. Whether it’s a physical book or a digital story on the Kolibri platform, many students now have the world at their fingertips.
A Transformation of Spirit
Many children join for the excitement of the competition, but they stay because they find a new sense of self. We see their growth not just in their grades, but in the way they speak, lead, and carry themselves. They are becoming more confident communicators and more thoughtful neighbors. As the Departmental Director of Education noted, the improvement in academic performance is clear, but the real victory is seeing these children truly connect with what they learn.
A Journey We Share
This milestone belongs to everyone. It belongs to the teachers whose passion ignites the classroom every day. It belongs to the local leaders and authorities who recognized that investing in a child’s mind is the best investment for the future. And it belongs to our donors and partners, whose belief in this vision makes every new library shelf and digital title possible.
Together, we aren't just promoting reading to the children—we are showing them that their futures are limitless. 📖🌎
